Welcome to CS Students

Dear CS Students:

As we start this new academic year, I would like to welcome back all our students who are returning and extend a warm welcome to those of you who are here at GW and CS for the first time. Please visit our website http://www.cs.gwu.edu/ frequently where you'll always find the latest Department news, as well as the Fall 07 issue of the Department Newsletter! And please contact our new Webmaster, Timothy Kim, with your feedback. We want to know how our website can better meet your needs. If you have any news you would like to share with the Department, please let Elizabeth Bernard know.

Please join me in welcoming our new faculty, Assistant Professor Matthew Burke who joined us this Summer, as well as say farewell to retiring faculty Professor Feldman and Professor Maurer who are now Emeritus Professors. You'll see many new faces in the Department this year as we welcomed several new staff members into our CS Family.

Many of our students and faculty were honored with awards last year and I want to mention just a few of these here. Professor Liliana Florea was awarded the highly selective Sloan Research Fellowship. Professor Xiuzhen Cheng is entering the fourth year of her NSF Career Award. CS doctoral student Darby Thompson was awarded the Achievement Rewards for College Student (ARCS) Scholarship for 07-08. She is the second CS student in a row to receive this prestigious award! CS undergraduate students Andrew Sweeney and William Van Besien were awarded NASA Summer Internships for 07. You'll find a complete list of awards in the Fall 07 Department Newsletter.

Last year we instituted 2 new Department programs. We created a new competitive travel award for our doctoral students to assist them in presenting their research at conferences. We also began an MS/Graduate Certificates cohort program with Booz Allen Hamilton - the first such cohort in our department's recent history. The cohort has been a great success and we hope to establish more such collaborative ventures with industries in the future.

Our facilities are an important and integral part of our Department. Last year we made improvements and updated the equipment in our senior design lab and Tompkins 211 to make them of even greater benefit to our students. The lounge and computer laboratory on the 7th floor of the Academic Center are open to all in the CS Family. Our thanks to Prof. Jonathan Stanton and to our Systems Administrators Liran Ma and Aleks Stefanovski for all their hard work. Please contact them with your feedback about the improvements. The Curriculum Committee continues to work hard to improve both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. We want to hear your suggestions and encourage you to contact Prof. Narahari (undergraduate curriculum chair), Prof. Youssef (graduate curriculum chair), or me.

We have planned for this year more initiatives and more great events like the visit last April by our own Academy Award nominated alumnus Bill Westenhofer (MS '95 Computer Science, SEAS); but we want to hear your ideas too! I wish you all the very best for this new academic year. Come in and say "hi".
