Scientific databases in applied and fundamental science. Basic facts on the organization of living systems and principles of bioinformatics analysis. Introduction to database management and information retrieval. Relational algebra and SQL query language. Advanced retrieval capabilities. Data mining. Rules of inductive inference. Classification, clustering, and machine learning techniques. Confronting the problems of complexity. Prerequisites: CSci 123 and either CSci 103 or CSci 133. (Spring)
