ProgramEffective for students entering in or after Fall 2005.The basic B.S. curriculum includes a number of specifically required courses, but also some categories of courses for which you have choices to make. In this document, the categories appear in the approximate order in which they first occur in the curriculum. The semester-by-semester curriculum suggests certain courses in certain semesters. The Computer Science courses generally follow a strict prerequisite sequence that you must not violate; the other courses may be moved around in your program, but you must end up with the right number of courses in each category and must satisfy all prerequisites. Always consult with your advisor before finalizing any curriculum choices. Mathematics Requirements: Take either the sequence Math 20-21-32, or the sequence Math 31-32. All students must take 2 math courses not counting Math 20, so if you take Math 20, you should substitute a math elective for one of your unrestricted electives. Humanities and Social Science Electives: In this category you choose from the HSS course menu. Normally, you choose two humanities courses in the same field and one in a different field, and two social sciences courses in the sme field and one in a different field, for a total of four fields. Some flexibility is possible here, if you are taking a minor (Secondary Field) program; see your advisor. You may satisfy the 2-course humanities selection with an introductory sequence in a foreign language (including American Sign Language) if this language is not your native language. (There is no restriction against taking advanced courses in your native language.) Natural Science Requirements: In this category you choose three courses from Physics (Phys) 21 and 22, Biology (BiSc) 13 and 14, and Chemistry (Chem) 11 and 12. Two of your three courses must form a sequence, i.e., Phys 21-22, BiSc 13-14, or Chem 11-12. Statistics Requirement: Choose ApSc 115, Stat 51, Stat 53, or Stat 91. Math or Science Elective: In this category you choose one course in mathematics or natural science. If you choose math, choose from ApSc 113, CSci 173 or 194, EMSE 109, Math 33, 124, or 125, Phil 121, or another similar course with advisor approval. If you choose science, you can take the second course in your second science above, or choose another natural science like astronomy, earth science, or forensic science. Computer Science Elective: Choose a Computer Science course which is not required and is numbered above 135. This includes graduate-level courses. Breadth Electives: Choose three Breadth Electives from any desired fields except math, computer science, electrical engineering, further work in the subjects of your main science electives, or computing-related courses that may arise in other departments. Unrestricted Electives: Even the "unrestricted" courses are slightly restricted. Choose any academic courses, including Computer Science courses numbered above 135. Do not choose BAdM 54, 125, Mgt 119, 120, 121, 122, or Stat 129, 130, 131 as unrestricted electives. Special Electives in the Bioinformatics Option: Electives E1 and E2 are unrestricted. However, if you opt for a Secondary Field in Biology, choose two Biology electives (B1 and B2) from BiSc 102, 103, 107, 137, 150, 151, 180, or 171.
