Academics

BS Electives

The B.S. curriculum includes a number of required courses, but also six categories of electives:

The semester-by-semester curriculum suggests certain electives in certain semesters. While the Computer Science electives are intended for juniors and seniors, the other electives may be moved around in your program, but you must end up with the right number of courses in each category.

Humanities and Social Science Electives

In this category you choose from the HSS course menu. These courses must normally be distributed as follows:

  • Two humanities courses in one field (not necessarily a sequence)
  • One humanities course in a second field
  • Two social science courses in one field (not necessarily a sequence)
  • One social science course in a second field
You may satisfy the 2-course humanities selection with an introductory sequence in a foreign language (including American Sign Language) if this language is not your native language. (There is no restriction against taking advanced courses in your native language.)

Natural Science Electives

In this category you must choose one two-course sequence from:

  • Physics (Phys) 21 and 22
  • Biological Sciences (BiSc) 13 and 14 (old numbers: 11 and 12) (13 and 14 are actually independent of each other; neither has the other as a prerequisite. If you take both, we will count them as a sequence.)
  • Chemistry (Chem) 11 and 12
and a third course taken from a different science. That is, choose
  • BiSc 13-14 and either Phys 21 or Chem 11, or
  • Chem 11-12 and BiSc 13 or 14 or Phys 21, or
  • Phys 21-22 and BiSc 13 or 14 or Chem 11.

Math or Science Elective

In this category you choose one course in mathematics or natural science. If you choose math, choose from:

  • ApSc 113
  • CSci 173 or 194
  • EMSE 109
  • Math 33, 124, 125
  • Phil 121
or another similar course with advisor approval.
If you choose science, you can take the second course in your second science above, or choose a different science from the Science electives list.

Computer Science Electives

In this category you choose two Computer Science courses which are not required and are numbered above 150. This includes graduate-level courses.

Non-Computing Electives

In this category you choose two courses that are not computing-related courses. That is, you may choose any academic courses except:

  • courses in the Computer Science department
  • BAdM 54, 125
  • Mgt 119, 120, 121, 122
  • Stat 129, 130, 131
and other similar computing-related courses that may arise in other departments.

Unrestricted Electives

Even the "unrestricted" courses are slightly restricted. You may choose any academic courses, including Computer Science courses, except the following Computer Science courses, which are designed for non-CS majors and thus inappropriate for you to take in a CS major program:

  • CSci 10, 30, 33, 35, 49, 50
  • CSci 100, 102, 103
The BAdM, Mgt, and Stat courses listed above are also excluded.
