You can apply for a GTA position, an Instructional Assistant (IA) position, or a Grader position.
- GTA positions: GTAs provide teaching assistance and conduct research with their advisors. Therefore, GTA positions are reserved for students doing or planning to do research, and thus mostly for PhD students. The evaluation of GTA applications and GTA annual renewals depends on the performance of the GTA in both teaching assistance and research. GTAs must take and pass the GW GTAP to qualify for full GTA responsibilities.
- IA positions: They are only for helping the department meet its instructional mission. IAs provide teaching assistance but are not expected to do research. Both MS and PhD students are eligible to apply for IA. IAs are appointed on a semester-by-semester basis. IAs must take and pass the GW GTAP to qualify for full IA responsibilities.
- Grader positions: Graders’s responsibilities are limited to grading assignments and tests. Graduate students and upperclassmen are elibible to apply. Graders do not take the GW GTAP.
