International Aid Transparency Initiative

About the Work

This position is about using technology to help fundamentally change the way international
development projects are managed.

The International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) was founded in 2011, and has had incredible success
in standardizing publication of information on international development activities. Almost all of the
world’s major funders now publish data on international development spending to a central registry in a
common format, permitting easy access, analysis, and aggregation of a wealth of important data on
projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean. These data are invaluable for
citizens and governments in developing countries who want to understand the real patterns of
development spending in their countries, and who want to analyze development projects which are
affecting their lives.

However, the gap between data publication and data use is still wide. The IATI data model is complex,
the registry is still evolving, and there is a massive need for skilled hackers to sift through the data and
develop strategies for parsing, quality assurance, and aggregation. Many of DG’s products are starting to
use IATI data at scale, and we are taking a leading role in the community effort to help IATI live up to its
potential.

About You

You are smart and tech-savvy, with a background in data analysis or web development (or both!), and
you want to use your skills to help change the world. We have no specific educational requirements -
what we require is that you can hit the ground running on day one with building cool products for
parsing XML, analyzing IATI data, and extracting actionable insights. (And yes, it’s totally fine if your first
step is “convert the XML to JSON”).

About the Experience

This is a paid internship, based at the amazing and brand-new OpenGov Hub office at McPherson
Square. You will spend the summer in an open concept environment, hooked up to fast wifi and
unlimited coffee, surrounded by http://opengovhub.org/who-we-are/ ">cool organizations, in the heart of a a great neighborhood. You will get the chance to learn from the AidData team about international development, you will push the
organization’s thinking around IATI, and you will be supported by a team who can quickly get you up-to-speed on the domain-specific aspects of the IATI data model. Your insights will not sit on a shelf, but rather will be integrated into core products and production code bases. And who knows - if things go well there is a very good chance that you will be doing this integration yourself before the summer is out.

I am a small-business owner seeking help with a new website designed in WordPress that is about 7/8 done. The original designer is no longer available to finish, and I’m stuck with an incomplete site. I need someone for a short-term gig to do the following:

    • Study both the existing site and the new site to understand what’s been done to date.
    • Sit down with me for a few hours in person to 1) answer a long list of questions/changes that need to be addressed; 2) train me in how to make my own future changes
    • Assist with the full transition of current subscribers from the old site to the new site (only partially done to date).
    • Test anything that needs testing.
    • Help me make the site go live and work out any kinks that show up.

You need to be comfortable working with:

    • all functions of WordPress, including creating/editing Shortcodes and Plugins
    • relational databases & SQL/PHP, including a password system
    • online payment API’s (preferably Stripe)

WiserTogether, Inc., a healthcare IT company located in Georgetown, D.C. near the waterfront, is looking for
    parttime
help with technical support tasks for our employees. The job pays $20/hr and hours will vary from
10 to 20 in a typical week. Sometimes irregular hours evenings
    or weekends will
    be required because of
the “on call” nature of some of the tasks. We’re a four year old, venture capital backed company doing very
innovative and exciting work in healthcare, and this job could be a great entry point to a permanent position
eventually. We were awarded Most Innovative Company in Healthcare in 2012 by the Healthcare
    Consumerism Institute.

    Technical support tasks include,

    • Processing returned computers and dispatching them to newly hired employees, etc.. (as needed)
    • Walking people thru everyday tasks like password resets, password changes, etc.. (12 times per week, probably)
    • Work thru provisioning/access issues (usually newly hired employees)
    • Help troubleshooting our supported apps like hipchat, onelogin, etc.. (few times/week)
    • Audit users' permissions, access, etc. for security (once a month)
    • Asset management / inventory (I don't think we do this much and we really should)

Things that could follow in this type of role if we determine works well:

    • provisioning/ deprovisioning of users
    • phone provisioning management (I think Alicia may be doing some of this, now?)
    • first tier administrative support for VPN and perhaps even OpenShift
    • triage of outages/monitoring alerts, and the like

This job requires the ability to respond to alerts and requests and does not always involve scheduled hours.
The key success criteria will be the staff member’s ability to keep the company moving by responding
helpfully to employees in need, often without much notice. Technical acumen is required and the company
    will provide training on specifics.
