There's more than one way to peel an orange, and there's more than one way to learn. As someone who works daily to engage students, you know that they come to your classroom with unique traits and identities.

We want to hear about them! We're asking students to get creative and put together a short video that illustrates their identity as a unique learner.

We're awarding a $2500 scholarship for the best video.

Company:
Betterific

Betterific, the digital suggestion box of the future, is looking for some passionate, innovative, talented developers to join our team for the summer (summer stipend included). Our startup was named one of the top 13 Statups to watch by TheNextWeb, and we've been busy over the last 6 months creating an amazing product that we'd love you to be a part of.

Betterific was started by two local DC residents and an MIT '08 grad. The site has been designed and coded. We have thousands of active users and a couple of brands using the site now. As you can imagine, we are growing and our CTO is looking for some talented developers to join our team over the summer (knowledge of Ruby on Rails and postgres is a bonus).

We're based in DC.This is a great opportunity to jump into the startup scene and join a team of passionate and experienced entrepreneurs from the ground up. This internship comes with a $500 stipend for the summer.

Local entrepreneur with a functioning database driven website needs help with systems configuration and programming. Immediate need is to help owner turn his pc into a virtual environment (to make changes to site infrastructure prior to making them live). Second priority is to change scripts relating to trial subscriptions. Additional projects needed are: creating a “cron” job that sends daily emails based on user preferences; other changes necessary to change site back end (data upload and filtering) and front end (site querying). Looking for someone with Python experience. Site uses the django framework backed by postgreSQL. I am confident that a capable person with python experience can figure out how to work with the rest of the site infrastructure. I frankly don’t care what year someone is provided they can help me.

I am looking to start someone at $12 an hour for 5 or so hours a week for an indefinite time period. This opportunity will suit someone looking for a flexible source of income where they can learn new skills. Extending the duration of employment, increasing the number of hours, and upping compensation will depend upon what the programmer brings to the table and how successful the website is.

Overview

Last semester we created a basic site called GW Ask a Guy, where girls from GW could go on a website and ask any ‘love’ related question to a guy, anonymously. The site received 2000 hits in the first two weeks and many more after that.

Job Description

We are looking for a Graduate or Undergraduate student that could design an HTML website, modeled after www.gwaskaguy.com, where people could create an account and have the “Ask, Shout and Confess” functionalities. This would be a great way to get involved in a project from the ground up and partake in website that is likely to receive many hits from GW students (based on the past success of gwaskaguy.com). If confident in your ability to create the site, we can offer an initial stipend of $300 for the work and negotiate terms for continuity.

Information Sciences Institute (ISI)

Company Profile

Founded in 1972, The Information Sciences Institute (ISI) of the University of Southern California (USC) is a world leader in research and development of advanced information processing, computer and communications technologies. ISI is one of the nation’s largest, most successful university-affiliated research institutes. The Institute attracts nearly $60 million annually – from corporations and more than 20 federal government agencies – for basic and applied research. USC/ISI bridges the gap between theoretical basic research and product-oriented research and development. ISI’s diverse expertise ranges from core engineering and computer science discovery to design, modeling and implementation of innovative prototypes and devices. ISI's technical areas include
1) computational systems and technology such as adaptive parallel execution, fine-grained computing, wireless communications and networking, quantum computing, supercomputing and biomimetics;
2) advanced electronics for space and other purposes
3) intelligent systems such as natural language, machine translation and information integration;
4) informatics that include computer networks, medical informatics and decision systems.

A pacesetter for nearly 40 years, ISI helped conceive, design and implement the Internet, including communications protocols that remain fundamental to today's Internet operations. ISI developed the Domain Name System (DNS) and its now-familiar “.com” address system. ISI's MOSIS subsidiary has fabricated more than 50,000 low-cost, low-volume integrated circuits for customers worldwide. ISI is also the home of USC Lockheed Martin Quantum Computation Center.

The Institute employs about 350 engineers, research scientists, and staff. About half of our research staff holds Ph.D.s, with 50 serving as USC adjunct faculty. ISI offers many of the best features of two worlds: major research universities and corporate research-and-development labs. The result is an unusually flexible working environment in which information scientists can focus on the subjects that intrigue them most -- in roles designed to reflect individual career goals -- with internationally renowned colleagues from numerous, cutting-edge technology disciplines.

ISI is based in Marina del Rey, California, and maintains a satellite office in the Nation's capital area in Arlington, Virginia. ISI-Arlington plays a vital role in serving ISI's government customers. ISI-Arlington is also the home of ISI's Adaptive Parallel EXecution group, Fine-grained Computing Group, Wireless Systems Group, and Disruptive Electronics Group.

Software Development at Epic
Build software with a purpose.

As a developer at Epic, your work will directly impact the way 40% of Americans receive healthcare - in fact, it's likely you will affect the life of someone close to you. Working at the junction of two growing fields, medicine and computer science, you'll help create the best software for your users' needs - from the massively scalable database to the user interface for visualizing complex information. You'll meet with doctors, nurses, and other frontline professionals to understand their workflows and turn their needs into innovative software. Your work will help reduce medical errors, improve the management of chronic diseases, and find new ways to facilitate collaboration between patients and their care teams.
Epic's campus provides offices conducive to working with small, focused teams in a collaborative and one-of-a-kind environment. You will build multi-tier enterprise software for large healthcare organizations using a variety of technologies, as well as a variety of devices, from tablets to large wall-mounted screens. You'll work with forward thinking colleagues from around the world. One visit to Epic and you'll know we take our software seriously - ourselves, not so much. (Did we mention the tree house?)
More than just important work.
Epic is located in Madison, Wisconsin, a city regularly ranked as one of America's best places to live. You'll earn competitive wages and receive benefits befitting a leading software company (401k match, great health insurance, life insurance, performance bonuses and stock appreciation rights). Epic's environment is one of continuous learning; you'll have access to opportunities to expand your skill set and share your knowledge with others.
